The Data Processing Boot Camp represents a 2-day hands-on training opportunity. It will cover both basic and advanced workflows in HIPS and SIPS, introduce additional data analysis and engineering capabilities, and highlight the benefits of process automation through CARIS Onboard.

The Boot Camp has been designed with new and existing users in mind. It will be of particular interest to those involved in surveying Ports and Waterways, but will also be beneficial for anyone working in the field of hydrography for the purposes of defence, charting or scientific research.

Each delegate attending the boot camp will have a dedicated workstation for this training experience. It will be led by CARIS software experts, focused on educating about emerging trends in the hydrographic and geomatics industry, and how to integrate effective solutions into best practices to develop time saving techniques.


Introduction to HIPS Essential (morning)

The opening session will introduce the latest streamlined HIPS workflow for processing bathymetry data from multibeam sonar. It will lead you through the essential steps required to create an accurate seafloor model, including the application of position and depth corrections and the introduction of the Process Designer. 3D visualization as a method of quality control will also be covered in preparation for downstream analysis.

The Engineering and Analysis Module (afternoon)

Armed with a processed seafloor model, we will now be ready to start some in-depth analysis. Learn how to incorporate laser scan data to supplement your seafloor model and use the combined result to perform difference and volume computations against theoretical models of channel and harbor areas.


Processing Automation with CARIS Onboard (morning)

Equipped now with the fundamentals and skills to use the data to make some key decisions, this session will introduce the concept of remote data processing and near real-time quality control. The Process Designer script built in the first session will be used to drive an automatic processing workflow in CARIS Onboard. The focus switches to process and data monitoring through the Control Centre rather than manual data manipulation.

Advanced Processing with HIPS and SIPS Professional (afternoon)

Using the knowledge you have gained so far, this final session of the boot camp will cover a variety of advanced topics. They will include:

  • How to process water column data and multiple detections
  • The latest in backscatter processing techniques including normalized, time series, and multi-spectral for seafloor classification and habitat mapping
  • In-depth understanding of the Variable Resolution surface technology and the benefits it can provide
  • The latest Bathy Lidar workflows in HIPS Professional, including LAS format support and waveform analysis
