Mapping the Sound – Courtesy of KCTS, Seattle, WA

Students and instructors from the University of Washington's School of Oceanography, a member of the CARIS Academic program, are on a research vessel that is mapping the Puget Sound. Students are getting hands-on experience using the latest multibeam sonar technology to gather the data. CARIS HIPS and SIPS is being used to analyze the data to support the creation of nautical charts. The goal is to gather data that can be incorporated into National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) database.

Much of the Puget Sound has never been mapped and detailed nautical charts are critical for safe shipping and navigation through this high traffic waterway.
